LearnerGuard's safety architecture is not a checklist. It is a layered system where each layer independently catches what the previous layer might miss.
Layer-by-layer breakdown
Each layer operates independently. A failure in one cannot bypass the others.
Pre-Trip Compliance Locks
Vehicle cannot be dispatched if any hard-lock document is expired or missing.
Every trip is gated by an automated compliance check. If the PrDP, vehicle licence disc, roadworthy certificate, or public liability insurance is expired, the system hard-locks the vehicle. No override without a service admin audit trail.
NFC Boarding Ledger
Every learner tap creates a tamper-resistant boarding record with timestamp and GPS.
NFC student cards produce cryptographically-linked boarding events. Each event records the learner ID, vehicle ID, driver ID, GPS coordinates, and timestamp. The ledger is immutable and retained for 12 months.
Distress Alert System
One-tap SOS from driver or learner notifies all stakeholders within seconds.
Any driver or learner can trigger a distress alert from the app. The alert immediately notifies the operator, school, and all parents of learners on that vehicle. GPS location is captured and logged as a safety incident.
Safety Incident Logging
Structured incident capture with photo evidence, classification, and follow-up tracking.
Near-misses, accidents, and behavioural incidents are captured in a structured format with NLTA-aligned incident categories. Reports are retained for 5 years and accessible in regulatory audits.
Safeguarding Documentation
Criminal clearance, SAFETA certificates, and safeguarding policies enforced by role.
Operators must upload a Safeguarding Policy (O9) before going route-ready. Drivers' Criminal Clearance (D5) and SAFETA certificates (D6) are tracked with expiry monitoring. Schools can view all clearances for drivers on their routes.
Real-Time Parent Notifications
Parents receive push notifications at every boarding event, arrival, and alert.
Parents receive an immediate notification when their child taps on and off the vehicle, when the vehicle arrives at school, and any time a distress alert is triggered. All notifications are logged and include the relevant GPS coordinates.
If the document is expired, the trip does not depart.
Eleven of the twenty-two tracked documents carry a hard-lock flag. When any hard-locked document expires, the vehicle is automatically blocked from departing on the LearnerGuard platform.
Hard-locks cannot be silently bypassed. Any override requires a service administrator action, which is recorded in the audit log with timestamp, admin ID, and justification.

LearnerGuard tracks all documents required under NLTA Act 5 of 2009, the Road Traffic and Transport Act, and Western Cape Provincial Regulatory Entity guidelines.
